What about the Yolk?

What about the Yolk was the name of Kinsey's science fair project. Kinsey finished her project last night after working for a final three and a half hours. She had been working at least an hour each day after school for the past two weeks. This was a hard project for Kinsey with a huge learning curve on the steps to completing a science project as well as learning and understanding the vocabulary and research. I know there were times when I was feeling like a horrible mother making her learn and do each step. I questioned if I was being to stubborn in not helping her do it and only helping her understand the process she was to do. (Honestly I still question that. I am not sure where my place is or should be for this project.) The first day we spent two and half hours at the library until Kinsey could decided on her question. We then could check out books and do her research. This project was a test of mine and Kinsey's patience with each other. The question she decided on was, "Do Brown eggs and white eggs have different Yolks?" Her concusion was, "Yes, the brown egg has a lighter yolk and the white egg has a darker yolk." I think she was proud of her completed project and even more excited it was over. I am proud of all her hard work. Today she came running to the car after school with complete excitement. Just before school got out they announced that Kinsey had won 2nd place for grades 1-4. I could tell this made all her work worth it for her and brought excitement back into science for her. She asked if we could celebrate her win with Pizza and Doughnuts and we did!

That is so great!! Way to go, Kinsey!

I am with you though, Nicole. Though I don't have a kid in school yet, it is hard to know where your place as a parent is in the learning process. I notice that I do a lot for Lily and should really probably back off and let her figure out what to do or how to solve the problem she has encountered with a toy. . . etc.

I think you did great and Kinsey will really benefit from it. You gave her enough guidance but in the end she is probably more proud of herself because she did it and not her mom. I always got a bit irked when my brothers did their pinewood derby cars. My dad helped - but my brothers did most of the work. And then you get the kids whose dad's did absolutely everything for them. I always think that is too bad. they could have learned so much more doing it on their own for the most part.
